As officers and crematoriums wrestle, our bodies of Covid victims pile up in Rajkot

ON WEDNESDAY morning, a sanitary inspector makes frequent visits to a cabin behind an acrylic wall within the Covid-19 part of the state government-run Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital in Rajkot. Each time he would carry plastic luggage—meant for packing our bodies of Covid victims. Outside the cabin, family peer by the window, asking once they would be capable to see the stays of their family members. An officer and two sanitary inspectors (SIs) within the cabin ask them to attend, saying there are various our bodies to deal with.

By round 8.30 pm, two of the 4 our bodies introduced from the hospital are queued up at Ramnathpara crematorium. “We have two electrical furnaces and one gasoline furnace. But the gasoline furnace is malfunctioning. Therefore, we simply have the electrical ones. It takes two hours to cremate one physique… We have already cremated 17 our bodies immediately and most of them have been of Covid sufferers,” stated Kalyan Gadhvi, a furnace operator.
