Kashmir saffron will get GI certification, Lt. Guv calls it ‘historic’

In a momentous resolution, the Central Government on Saturday issued certification of geographical indication (GI) for saffron grown in Kashmir Valley.  Calling it a historic step in bringing the valley’s model on the worldwide map with authentication, Lieutenant Governor G C Murmu mentioned, “with GI tag, Kashmir saffron will purchase extra prominence within the export market and it will assist farmers get one of the best remunerative value.”

According to Principal Secretary Agriculture Production Department Navin Okay Choudhary, the GI certification will cease prevalent adulteration of Kashmir saffron and authenticated saffron will fetch significantly better costs.

“Kashmir saffron is the one saffron on the earth that’s grown at an altitude of 1,600 meters which provides to its distinctive traits like longer and thicket stigma, pure deep-red color, excessive aroma, bitter flavour, chemical free processing and top quality color power, flavour and bitterness,” mentioned Choudhary including that sprinkler irrigation system saffron fields are being put in on a conflict footing and that is more likely to be accomplished in subsequent two weeks.

With the completion of sprinkler irrigation system and inauguration of Spice Park, inhabitants related to saffron will witness see change from its manufacturing to advertising and marketing, he added.

Meanwhile UT’s Lt General mentioned that restoring the pristine glory of Kashmir saffron is high precedence of each the governments on the UT and on the Centre.
