State Power Minister and Congress chief Nitin Raut has demanded strict motion towards the vice-president of a village panchayat in Tamil Nadu for allegedly forcing a Dalit lady panchayat president to take a seat on the ground throughout a gathering.
In a letter to TN Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday, Raut – who can be the president of AICC scheduled castes division – has demanded stern motion towards the vice-president of the panchayat, cancellation of the membership of the panchayat members and rapid authorized motion towards the accused.
“I used to be shocked to know from a media report that Shrimati Rajeshwari S, an elected president of Therku Thitthai panchayat in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, was compelled to take a seat on the ground throughout a gathering that she was presiding when the higher caste panchayat members and vice-president Mohan Rajan have been sitting in chairs,” he wrote. Raut mentioned he has learnt that the vice-president didn’t enable her to preside over the assembly as she belonged to a Scheduled Caste. Rajan even didn’t let Rajeswari S hoist the National Flag since she was elected from a reserved seat final 12 months, he mentioned within the letter.
The matter had come to gentle when the video of the incident went viral on social media.
The Congress chief requested the Governor to make sure strict implementation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and launch campaigns to finish discrimination towards Dalits and ladies.
