The U.S. State Department confirmed on Wednesday it had ordered China to shut its consulate in Houston, Texas, prompting Beijing to insist on agency countermeasures except Washington instantly reverses its choice.
The transfer comes as political tensions between the world’s two largest economies proceed to escalate.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus mentioned the directive to shut China’s Consulate General Houston had been made to guard American mental property and the personal info of its residents.
The Vienna Convention states diplomats should “respect the legal guidelines and rules of the receiving State” and “have an obligation to not intrude within the inner affairs of that State,” Ortagus continued.
She added that Washington wouldn’t tolerate the People’s Republic of China’s violations of U.S. sovereignty and intimidation of our folks, simply as now we have not tolerated the PRC’s unfair commerce practices, theft of American jobs, and different egregious conduct.
China has since condemned the choice, warning of agency countermeasures if the U.S. did not urgently rescind the order.
“The unilateral closure of China’s consulate basic in Houston inside a brief time frame is an unprecedented escalation of its current actions towards China,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin mentioned at a each day information briefing, Associated Press reported.
The U.S. has six consulates in mainland China, in keeping with its web site. They are in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang and Wuhan.
