UNESCO recognises two Odisha villages as Tsunami Ready

In a primary two coastal villages of Odisha have been recognised as being “Tsunami Ready” by UNESCO for his or her total preparedness to face the calamity, Additional Chief Secretary P Okay Jena stated on Thursday.

With it, Odisha turned the primary state within the nation to have such villages and the nation the primary within the Indian Ocean area to realize the honour from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.

The two coastal are Venkatraipur (Boxipalli) village of Rangeilunda block in Ganjam district and Noliasahi village of Ersama block in Jagatsinghpur district, he stated.

The certificates of recognition shall be handed over to the communities of Venkatraipur and Noliasahi in a digital occasion scheduled to be held on August 7.

Jena, who can also be the managing director of Odisha State Disaster administration Authority, will obtain the certificates from UNESCO.

International and nationwide delegates shall be current on the digital occasion, he stated including the UNESCO recognition is a good achievement for Odisha and its tsunami preparedness.

It will make Odisha a task mannequin for tsunami preparedness. With this award, the state is motivated to make the 326 villages and concrete native our bodies tsunami prepared in a single 12 months’s time, Jena stated.

Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), which was arrange within the state following the 1999 tremendous cyclone that claimed 10,000 lives, has applied the Tsunami Ready programme within the State.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami Ready Programme of IOC-UNESCO is a neighborhood performance-based programme that facilitates tsunami preparedness as an energetic collaboration of the neighborhood, neighborhood leaders, and nationwide and native emergency administration companies, an official launch issued by the state authorities stated.

The important goal of this programme is to enhance coastal neighborhood preparedness for tsunami emergencies, to reduce the lack of life and property and to make sure structural and systematic strategy in constructing neighborhood preparedness.
